Bring Back the Grunge!
Posted: 25th March 2011 by Adumb in Modelling, TutorialsTags: Modeling, Tutorial
I’ve noticed a huge lack of grunge being added to textures as of late, A little grunge can make a huge difference! Just a little dirt and mud can bring a whole new life to a texture with only 2 or 3 layers!
Here’s a few steps i use on all of my textures, from props, vehicles and houses. It’s always important to add some form of weathering as everything in real life is dirty in some way (Unless you married an OCD freak)
As you can see weathering can make up a huge part of the textures! I like using a tiled concrete texture to bring a nice overall weathered feel without much work.
I used this texture: http://www.cgtextures.com/texview.php?id=6628
Cleaned the odd parts off with the spot healing brush, scaled down to 512 and tiled onto a 2048 (you can use any size you want, thats just what i used for this tut) Make it a mask layer, set to overlay and set the opacity to 30ish (or whatever looks nice)
2nd is stains, making a mask just of stains can speed up texture time a lot, use anyone you’d like from here: http://www.cgtextures.com/textures.php?t=browse&q=52888
Find one you like ( I used the 10th one) scale, copy around a 2048 and make a mask by selecting marquee toll and holding ctrl and clicking on the stains player, now hold shift and click on add vector mask (bottom right the box with a ball) Set to overlay and play with the opacity until you get something you like. Make the mask black (seclet the mask and press shift + f5 and pick black from use) Find a nice brush and get painting!
3rd is a mud mask, something i love! Any dirt layer will work, I used this: http://www.cgtextures.com/texview.php?id=9325
Tile, mask, set the opacity to 60ish, find a good grunge brush and get painting!
Thats it for now, maybe i can make this some form of monthly texture-tip-blog-post if thats something you guys would like?
